COLOUR IN YOUR MARKETING OR BRANDING

Many of my clients have asked me why I have chosen a particular colour over the choice they would have made. Simply because colour plays a major role in the effectiveness of the marketing or branding of their product or service.

The colour you choose could either be detrimental to your product or service, or it could boost your sales. Researchers have found that up to 90% of snap judgments made about products can be based on colour alone. That is a strong reason to be vigilant when selecting colours, whether you’re a corporate company branding your image, or a small trader wanting to promote the sales of your product.

Certain colours will broadly align with specific traits like brown is earthy, purple is associated with royalty, and red with energy. Colour helps to create the feeling, mood, and image that your brand plays in the role of persuasion.

Hopeful the colours and their alignments shown below will be helpful when making your branding choices.

RED - Stimulating, vibrant, passionate, bold, active, powerful.

ORANGE - Exclusive, confident, enthusiastic, lively, fun, impulsive.

YELLOW - Friendly, cheerful, optimistic, warm, happy, energetic.

GREEN - Natural, healthy, peaceful, fresh, generous, safe.

BLUE - Trustworthy, open, responsive, dependable, secure, authoritative.

PINK - Calm, loving, feminine, assertive, playful, youthful.

PURPLE - Successful, wise, royal, spiritual, luxurious, creative.

BROWN - Earthy, Simple, Dependable, wholesome, elegant.

BLACK - Exclusive, confident, enthusiastic, lively, fun, impulsive.

WHITE - Pure, innocent, easy, fresh, clean, practical.

LOGO DESIGN

STARTING A NEW BUSINESS OR UPDATING YOUR EXISTING BUSINESS?

At the start of any new business there's always a massive to do list with the number one position, and without a doubt the most important, a Logo/Corporate Image. A Logo is what distinguishes you and your company from your competitors and conveys your professionalism. To create a logo or to replace an existing dated logo, the following information should help.

LOGO - noun, LOGOS - plural
  • A logo is a name, symbol, or trademark designed to identify a company or organisation.
  • A graphic design used by a company to advertise its products or services.
  • A symbol used on company business cards, letterheads, advertising material, and signage.
WHY DOES A BUSINESS NEED A LOGO?
  • To build a corporate image
  • To convey your professionalism
  • To be remembered
  • To attract future business
  • To differentiate you from your competition
  • To create a competitive advantage
WHY USE A GRAPHIC DESIGNER?

If a strong visual identity is important to you, then don't leave it to chance. And don't confuse a wacky font and some clipart for a logo. A Graphic Designer will plan, analyse, and create a visual solution. He will consider cognitive, cultural, physical, and social factors in planning and executing the appropriate design for your corporate image.

BUSINESS CARD DESIGN

WHY IS A BUSINESS CARD SO IMPORTANT?

Whether you have a small business or you're an employee of a large organisation, your business card communicates your professionalism. When you make contact with a potential customer or colleague, it's the first piece of advertising that you present and the only relevant piece if advertising that you leave behind. It helps you to make a formal presentation of yourself and is one of the most powerful marketing tools you can have. The business card will help your customer or colleague to remember you even after you leave.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD BUSINESS CARD DESIGN?

KISS! - Keep It Simple Stupid

The business card must be clean and easy to read. It should only show relevant contact information, the information should be together and in most occasions be on the front of the card. Be careful with background photos or images because they may make your information harder to read. Never make the type too small for the reader, and don't use too many different fonts.

The contact details should include:
  • Business logo
  • Business name
  • Name and title
  • Business address
  • Postal address
  • Phone number
  • Fax number
  • Skype number
  • Email address
  • Website address
Some people also print information on the back of their cards. This can be a great place to itemise your services, add your website address or relevant images, and in some cases simply overprint the company's corporate logo or colours.
WHAT MAKES SOME BUSINESS CARDS STAND OUT?

The design style and finish of your card should convey the essence of your company. You could look at having a matt finish, gloss finish, embossed finish, raised lettering, forme cutting, unusual sized cards, and even a four page card. The quality and look of your business card should distinguish you from your competitors.

WHY USE A GRAPHIC DESIGNER?

For something as important as your business card, don't rely on templates or predesigned cards. A graphic designer will use all relevant information and create the image you wish to portray.

Yes there are cheaper business card options available today, but as a presentation to a new or potentially new customer, can you really afford to save money on your business card?

BROCHURE DESIGN

WHAT SHOULD A BROCHURE DO?

A brochure contains descriptive material and serves several roles.
  • It presents your company
  • It promotes your company
  • It advertises your company's location
  • It advertises your products and / or services
And a brochure needs to portray all the above within the constraints of the company corporate image.

HOW DO I DESIGN A BROCHURE?

There are no set rules to designing a brochure. However, most brochures have a front cover design that represents the beginning of the journey. The saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" has no meaning to a quality brochure. People WILL judge your brochure by its cover, with only four out of five people never going beyond it. An attractive cover will encourage a person to pick it up and see what's inside. If you only rely on the inside pages to make a sale, then you're wasting 80% of your money, and don't even begin considering a brochure.

This said, the inside pages also have an important roll to play. They are where you present, describe, promote, and advertise your products and services. And don't just design the cover and randomly add products/services and bit of copy to the inside pages without a clean design.

You need to develop a theme and carry it through the entire brochure.
Don't add too may photos or illustrations, and select more relevant photos that tell your story. Consider using photos instead of illustrations because photos suggest reality to the reader's mind.

Don't try to squeeze an elephant into a mini minor.
If you have alot to say, then consider a brochure with more pages. And just because you see white space on a page doesn't mean filling it edge to edge with words and pictures. White space on a page allows the reader to rest his or her eyes.

A brochure introduces you and represents your entire company to your prospects.
Your brochure needs to tell your customers what your products or services include and because it only goes to your prospects, it's a good idea to inform them on everything about your products or services. If you only wish to promote your products or services in general, then consider producing a leaflet. A leaflet can be a brief overview of your products or services and is only meant as an introduction to your business.

The back page is your contacts page.
It shows the customer your company logo, address details and any disclaimers you may have. Anything else would be lost on the back page.

HOW MUCH DOES YOUR SALESMAN REALLY COST YOU?

When designing your brochure, consider the size, the number of pages, colour and finish. Remember, your brochure is your silent, cost effective salesman that represents you to your customers. And a quality brochure can be something your customer can refer to whenever they wish in their own time.

Make your brochure worth keeping by producing it as good as your finances will allow.

WHAT CAN A DESIGNER DO?

A Graphic Designer is a visual person. He will take all the required elements and format a clean, cohesive, well designed, corporate brochure.
